Delta park Neeltje Jans; the theme park of Zeeland
The Delta park Neeltje Jans lies at the foot of the largest storm surge barrier in the world. Our guests even come from Russia, China and America. That is why the Delta Works are known throughout the world. The Delta Works were built to protect the Netherlands from the water. More than half of the Netherlands is below sea level, so it is vital to protect our inhabitants from the water.
In 1953, there was a great flood that cost many people their lives. In the Netherlands, we agreed that this should not happen again. The result is the Delta Works, which can close off all connections with the sea if necessary. The chance of part of the Netherlands being flooded is now less than once every 4,000 years.
In the Deltapark Neeltje Jans there are exhibitions, guided tours and films that give a good impression of these special Delta Works. The park is open daily from 10.00 to 17.00, from 1 November to 1 April it is only open in the weekends.
